SNEAKING INTO THE PRISON in Madrid was much harder than in Segovia.

For one thing, we had to sneak a prisoner out along with us—whereas in Segovia, I’d simply performed the ritual in the cell and then left.

For another, this prison was massive. And much more heavily guarded.

My dark magic flowed within me, ready to take flight and explode. I knew I could easily take down the entire force of soldiers surrounding the prison. But I didn’t dare voice that option. Simply thinking about it made my stomach roil.

I truly was becoming a monster.

Jorge suggested he shift to his raven form and creep into the prison while Izzy and I distracted the guards. I had to admit, this plan was much better than my kill them all instinct.

“Sounds brilliant,” Izzy said in a low voice as we peered around the corner toward the prison across the street. “But how do you intend to get the prisoner out if he can’t shift with you?”

I raised a finger and dug through my bag. The potion vials clinked until I found one filled with a familiar orange liquid. “Vanishing potion,” I said. “It’ll be slower with two people, but it should get you out.”

Jorge nodded and took the vial, his eyes roving over me. “Will you be all right?”

I knew his question was much more loaded than a mere pleasantry. “Yeah,” I said at once. “Izzy will be with me.”

Again, I was reminded of the embarrassing notion that I needed a babysitter.

But at this point, I could hardly deny it. I needed someone to keep my dark magic in check. Especially since I was failing at the task.

“If you run into trouble down there, just shout, ‘Bullocks,’” Izzy said with a cheery smile.

Jorge fixed a flat look on her, though the corners of his lips twitched. I glanced between them, sensing a spark in their gazes that hadn’t been there before.

“You two be careful,” Jorge whispered before shifting into his raven form and taking flight.

Izzy and I gazed upward until his dark form melted into the midnight sky. When I could no longer make out his shape, I looked at Izzy accusingly. “What in Lilith’s name is going on between you two?”

“What do you mean?” Izzy asked, but she wouldn’t meet my eyes. Instead, she became very focused on adjusting her cloak.

“I mean, you no longer hate each other. And I can definitely sense some heat between you.”

A blush crept into Izzy’s face, but she met my gaze evenly. “I’m with Harrison.”

I raised an eyebrow. “Are you?”

Izzy’s eyebrows lowered. “Yes. Can we drop this and focus on our task? Jorge needs us.”

“He needs you,” I muttered as Izzy darted across the street. With a deep breath, I hurried after her.

The armed men at the prison entrance wore blue and white, just like the Madrid warlocks I’d tried so hard to avoid in my city. But as Izzy and I drew nearer, I got a fresh whiff of sweat, dirt, and . . . ordinariness.

They were mortals.
